In recent years Wales has become home to an ever increasing group of producers who produce an ever increasing selection of liqueurs and spirits. If you haven’t tried some of these here’s a few recommendations to look out for. Most are available to buy online but you can also meet the producers and try before you buy at Markets and Festivals throughout the year. You’ll also find a selection available at off licences and some of the most popular brands are now widely available through supermarkets.
Celteg produces a range of country wines and liqueurs from the winery in Cerdigion. In recent years Celteg have won several awards – the Damson Liqueur and Ginger Wine are Welsh Menu favourites.
Celtic Spirit Company
The Celtic Spirit Company is the oldest spirit company in Wales producing spirits and liqueurs from traditional old family recipes. The range includes 12 Year Old Celtic Whisky, Celtic Poteen and our favourite the award winning Danzy Jones, a wonderfully smooth and mellow whisky liqueur – very warming!
Condessa Welsh Liqueurs
Condessa produce a range of award winning fruit liqueurs and low fat cream liqueurs from their factory and winery on Anglesey. The range includes their originalaward winning Welsh Cream and Sloe Gin Liqueurs plus more recent additions such as Limoncello.
Cwm Deri Vineyard
Perfect for winter evenings is their Pembrokeshire Punch, an intense blend of autumn fruits producing a rich sweet red country wine. Cwm Deri suggest trying it as a mulled wine – sounds like a plan as a Christmas warmer. Da Mhile Distillery – Orange 33 Liqueur
We were introduced to this organic orange liqueur when we were shown around the Da Mhile Distillery. The aroma from the oak casks used in the ageing process was intense and intoxicating! Something different to impress your dinner guests. The distillery also produces organic whisky and gin.
Penderyn is the most recognisable of the of the Welsh spirit brands and is now widely available through retailers and supermarkets. In addition to the highly acclaimed Welsh Whisky range Penderyn also produces Brecon Gin, Five Vodka and the supremely smooth cream liqueur, Merlyn.
Toffoc is a unique toffee flavoured vodka produced on Anglesey. Not too sweet to enjoy on it’s own with ice, it also works well as a topper to ice cream. Check the Toffoc website for details of other recipe ideas and stockists in the UK.
Lysh Liqueurs are hand made using surplus fruits growing in the orchard of the family farm. We first sampled the Damson Gin Liqueur at the Conwy Food Festival and loved the taste. The stylish presentation makes it perfect for gifting, but don’t forget to treat yourself too!
