Raymond Blanc Sampling Pendragon Smoked Salmon

Throughout the year we’ve been lucky to go along to lots of food festivals and sample lots of lovely Welsh produce, so we thought it would be fun to look back and highlight some of our favourites. There’s no science or formal tasting involved in our decision making process – just a genuine “we like it because it tastes great.”

So here we go… in alphabetical order!

Cadog Cheddar
There’s lots of fantastic cheese produced in Wales but we discovered the mature and vintage varieties produced at Llandyrnog Creamery and we loved them. Widely available in supermarkets.

Celtic Spirit Co – Danzy Jones
A wonderfully smooth and mellow whisky liqueur produced by the oldest spirit company in Wales. Very warming!

Coco Bean – White Chocolate and Raspberry Brownie
Homemade by Ruth, a trained chocolatier, we love these tangy brownies. We also love the Salted Caramel variety which is made with Halen Mon vanilla salt. Not yet sampled the Christmas flavours, Mint and Christmas Orange, but they do sound good!

Cnwd – Welsh Farm House Terrine
A coarse pork pate with pistachio nuts and green peppercorns. Our personal favourite in a great range of pates and terrines created by Scott Davis.

Cwm Deri Vineyard – Elderflower Wine
A lovely sweet white country wine that evokes happy memories of summer. Chill and enjoy!

Jones o Gymru
Wonderfully crunchy and tasty hand cooked Welsh potato crisps flavoured with lovely Welsh ingredients including Halen Mon Sea Salt. Now available in Tesco.

Swansea Fish – Pendragon Smoked Salmon
Superior salmon, slow smoked with oak in the traditional way. We took this splendid product to Taste of London with us and had great fun sampling with some Michelin starred chefs including the fabulous Raymond Blanc. This one definitely makes it to the Christmas breakfast table served up with scrambled eggs!

The Little Welsh Deli – Smokey Joe Pasty
Filled with chicken breast & smoked bacon in a creamy white sauce, this put a big smile on our faces on a very wet afternoon at Cardiff International Food Festival.

Uncle Peter’s Fudge
A fabulous creamy smooth fudge available in several flavour combinations. We can’t choose between the Chocolate and the White Chocolate and Baileys. All very indulgent!

Village Dairy / Llaeth y Llan
Recognised as Gold winners within the Milk, Butter and Cream category at this year’s True Taste of Wales awards, we think this is the creamiest yoghurt ever. Difficult to choose our favourite flavour but both the Mandarin and Gooseberry are definitely worth a try.

Welsh Brew Tea
We had to include this – it’s an essential at The Welsh Menu HQ. We probably drink more of it than we should but it definitely helps us through the day. Coffee, chocolate and gift mugs also available… Stirring stuff, as they say!

Welsh Special Treats – Raspberry and Melon Jam
Our favourite in a fabulous range of products produced on the Gower in small batches using traditional methods. This jam won a Great Taste Awards Gold Star in 2011. We’re looking forward to trying the Red Grapefruit Marmalade which was awarded a Great Taste Awards Gold Star 2012.
